Does everyone in my family need the app?

No. Gravity is only for you. Nobody you add is contacted by it, told about it, or needs to install anything. They just hear from you more often.

Is this not what a group chat is for?

A group chat is a room everybody has to keep tending. Gravity is a private nudge to reach one person directly, which is usually what a parent or a grandparent actually wants.

Can it remind me about birthdays?

Birthday is an optional field on each person, so you can keep it in the same place as everything else rather than in a separate calendar.

Will it use my phone contacts to find my family?

No. Gravity never asks for contacts access on either platform. You type the names in, which takes about 30 seconds each.
